Decoration
Preparation of glazes and colours, application of glazes and
a spectrum of decorating techniques.
The 2011 season includes two five-day programs entitled
D1 – Glazes and Decorations. It also encompasses RAKU firing and enjoyed
great interest last year. This course also forms the basis for D2 –
Alchemistry of Glazes and Colours. You will discover a new world of experiments
from the recipe book of Petr Toms. The pre-Christmas course D1M – Painted
Ceramics is devoted to improving your skills with a brush.
Cobalt under Glaze

- enriching experience in decorating by painting cobalt under the glaze on
light-coloured and porcelain body

- total of 55 hours (7 days), 14 hours of theory + 41 hours of
practice

- composition of decoration on a hanging plate and a desert plate,
decorated tile

Painted Ceramics
- Name of the course:
- D1 – Painted Ceramics
- Objective of the course:
- learning three basic techniques used for decorating ceramics with emphasis
on historical connections, distribution of the decoration over the surface and
harmony of colours.

- completion of course M1 or
experience at this level
- Length of the course:
- total of 39 hours (5 days), 11 hours of theory + 28 hours of
practice
- Contents of the course:
- decoration is applied on a set of 4 bisqued, glazed pots and under and into
unfired glaze; another 2 pots are available for painting on a fired glaze with
refiring. The entire program is centered around the subject of pharmacy jars;
subjects for decoration are obtained by visiting the Baroque pharmacy at the
Kuks Hospital during the course.

Alchemy of Glazes and Colours
- Name of the course:
- D2 – Alchemy of Glazes and
Colours
- Objective of the course:
- creative work in preparing and using glazes, both based on natural
components and in mixing new compositions from purchased semi-products; gaining
experience with the effect of various kinds of firing on the appearance of
the glaze
- Suitable for:
- medium advanced and advanced
- Entrance requirements:
- completion of course D1 or experience at
this level
- Length of the course:
- total of 55 hours (7 days), 9 hours of theory + 46 hours of
practice
- Contents of the course:
- mixing and firing ash glazes, preparing and firing earthy glazes, components
for mixing glazes available on the market, effect of oxidation and reduction
firing on the appearance of the glaze Includes reduction wood-firing in an
outdoor kiln and RAKU firing.
